Therapy Intensives in Halifax, Saint John & Ontario

Sometimes weekly therapy isn’t the right container. Not because the work isn’t important, but because the nature of what you’re carrying, or the pace at which you need to move through it, calls for something different. Therapy intensives offer extended, focused time with your therapist a deliberate deepening of the work, rather than a weekly hour that barely scratches the surface before the week begins again.

“Some things can’t be meaningfully opened and closed in fifty minutes. An intensive creates the space to dig in deeper.”

Our intensives aren’t about doing more therapy faster for the sake of it. They’re about creating the right conditions for specific kinds of work, trauma processing, EMDR, IFS parts work, and the particular depth that couples and relationship intensives require. For the right client, a well-designed intensive can accomplish in a focused period what might otherwise take months of weekly sessions to reach.

Who Intensives Are Designed For

Weekly therapy isn't accessible

Your schedule, location, or life circumstances make a regular weekly commitment genuinely difficult. An intensive allows you to do meaningful work in concentrated blocks that fit your life.

You're ready to go deeper

You've done some therapeutic work and you're ready to move into something more sustained — to finally reach the thing that weekly sessions have been circling.

You're processing trauma

EMDR and trauma work benefit significantly from extended sessions that allow processing to complete rather than stop mid-cycle and resume a week later.

You and your partner are at a turning point

A relationship intensive creates dedicated, uninterrupted time to work through what's been hard to reach in ordinary life — with a therapist who can hold the full complexity of what you're both navigating.

You're navigating a specific chapter

A major transition, a grief process, a relationship crisis, or an identity shift — sometimes a concentrated period of focused support is exactly what a particular moment calls for.

You're from out of province

Virtual intensives make it possible to work with a therapist whose specialty aligns with your needs, regardless of where you are in Ontario, NB, or NS.

Intensive Formats

Every intensive is designed collaboratively with your therapist based on what you’re working on, your capacity, and your schedule. We offer three primary formats — all available in person or virtually.

Half-day intensive (2–4 hours)

Focused, sustained therapeutic work with built-in breaks and integration time. Well-suited to specific trauma targets, EMDR processing blocks, or a couple navigating a defined issue. A strong starting point for those new to intensive format.

Multi-day intensive (2–3 consecutive days)

Consecutive sessions allowing for overnight integration between sessions, which can deepen the processing significantly. Particularly effective for complex trauma, EMDR, and relationship work where multiple layers need time to settle before the next day begins.

Flexible / custom format

Not every intensive fits a standard format — and we don't try to make it. If your circumstances, goals, or nervous system call for something different, we'll design it together. Format, pacing, duration, and structure are all on the table.

Intensive Modalities

EMDR intensives

EMDR processing works in cycles — and being interrupted mid-cycle by the end of a 50-minute session can leave clients unsettled and the work incomplete. Extended sessions allow full processing cycles with proper closure, making the work both more effective and more comfortable. Many clients find that an EMDR intensive accomplishes what months of weekly sessions couldn't reach.

Trauma-focused intensives

Trauma work requires time to open, process, and integrate, a rhythm that is sometimes difficult to establish in weekly 50-minute increments. An intensive creates the conditions for that rhythm to develop naturally, with enough time for the nervous system to settle before you leave the session. Draws from EMDR, IFS, somatic approaches, and CPT based on what's most useful for you.

IFS (Parts Work) intensives

Internal Family Systems work means meeting, building trust with, and unburdening different parts of yourself. This process benefits enormously from unhurried time. An IFS intensive creates the extended, compassionate space for depth of access, and for the integration that follows when something meaningful shifts.

Couples & relationship intensives

A relationship intensive is not couples therapy compressed, it's a different experience entirely. Uninterrupted time together with a skilled therapist creates conditions for conversations that never happen in ordinary life, and for working through relational patterns at a depth that weekly sessions rarely reach. Suited for couples at a crossroads, in crisis, or simply ready to do the deeper work their relationship deserves. Available for all relationship structures.

How It Works

Every intensive is designed collaboratively with your therapist based on what you’re working on, your capacity, and your schedule. We offer three primary formats — all available in person or virtually.

Initial conversation

You reach out to let us know you're interested in an intensive. We'll ask a few questions to understand what's brought you here, what you're hoping to work on, and which therapist and format might be the best fit. No commitment required at this stage.

Intake session

Before the intensive itself, you'll have a standard session with your therapist. This gives you both the chance to build rapport, clarify goals, and design the intensive collaboratively. We don't skip this step, it's what makes the intensive work.

Your intensive

Your intensive is structured around your goals, with breaks, integration time, and pacing built in throughout. Your therapist will check in regularly to make sure the work is landing well and that you're resourced for what's being opened. You won't leave without proper closure.

Integration support

Intensive work continues to process after the sessions end. We'll discuss what integration support looks like for you whether that's a follow-up session, a warm transfer back to your existing therapist, or a plan for ongoing weekly therapy to consolidate.

A note on fit and safety: Intensives are not right for every person or every presentation, and we’ll be honest with you about that. During the intake process, your therapist will have a direct conversation about whether an intensive is the right fit for where you are right now. If it isn’t, we’ll tell you why and what might serve you better. Your wellbeing always comes before filling a schedule.

Common Questions About Intensives

Is an intensive right for me if I've never done therapy before?
Generally, an intake session comes first regardless, which is built into our process. For clients who are brand new to therapy, we’ll be thoughtful about whether an intensive is the right starting point, or whether a few weekly sessions first would set you up for better outcomes in the intensive itself. We’ll be honest with you either way.
It’s a meaningfully different experience. Regular couples therapy happens in 50-minute weekly windows, which means conversations often get interrupted, sessions end mid-cycle, and the week in between can undo what was just opened. A couples intensive is a sustained, uninterrupted experience designed to go to the depth that weekly sessions may not reach. Many couples describe it as the most meaningful work they’ve done together, because there’s finally enough time and space to get there.
Yes, virtual intensives are fully available and effective, including for EMDR and couples work. This is particularly relevant for clients in Ontario working with Jenn, or those in rural areas who want access to our team without travel. Your therapist will ensure the virtual format is adapted appropriately for extended sessions.
Fees are based on format, duration, and therapist, and are discussed during the initial conversation. While the upfront investment is higher than a single session, many clients find the concentrated progress meaningfully more cost-effective than months of weekly sessions to reach the same depth. You are always in control. Intensives are designed with regular check-ins and built-in breaks so pacing can be adjusted in real time. If something needs to slow down or stop, your therapist will support that fully, including ensuring proper closure, so you don’t leave feeling ungrounded or unfinished.

Low-cost therapy with supervised student interns

Low-cost counselling in Saint John, NB

Quality mental health care should be accessible — and we know that cost is one of the most real and persistent barriers standing between people and the support they need. Our supervised student intern program exists to change that, even in a small way.

“Accessible therapy isn’t lesser therapy. Our student interns bring genuine skill, fresh training, and something that’s harder to teach than clinical technique: the kind of presence that makes people feel truly heard.“

Our student interns are graduate-level students completing supervised clinical placements at The Therapy Collective. They are trained and work under the direct, ongoing supervision of our experienced clinical team. Every session is supported ,and the care you receive reflects the full standards of the practice.

How Supervision Works

You get the benefit of two clinicians, not one.

Student interns at The Therapy Collective receive regular individual and group supervision from our senior therapists. This means that your care is informed not just by your intern’s own training and instincts, but by the collective expertise of our whole clinical team. Cases are discussed thoughtfully, approaches are refined, and your intern is never working in isolation. Supervision isn’t a safety net — it’s a standard.
